  8. • What Finger Does

  10. Finger is a Macintosh implementation of the Un*x Finger protocol that allows you
  11. to finger anyone in the world.
  12.  
  13. • Using Finger
  14.  
  15. You must have MacTCP2.0 or above installed in order to use either of these
  16. applications.
  17.  
  18. To use CWRUFinger, first launch Finger and choose Finger… from the File menu.
  19. Enter the machine name and (optionally) the user name of the person you wish to
  20. finger (Note: If you have used unix, you may prefer to type user@machine into
  21. user field.  You can choose to query either a Finger server or a Whois Server by
  22. clicking the Whois radio.  Then Click the Search button.

  24. For Example: You want to know your friend's full name, but you only have his/her
  25. email address.
  26.  
  27. Type in User Field: kyc2 Click Search Button. The server will return information
  28. about this person.
  29.  
  30. If you know his/her first or last name, you can find out more about this person
  31. by using Whois option.
  32.  
  33. Type in User Field: Kevin Click Search Button. The server will return information
  34. about all the Kevin in the database.

  37. • How It Works

  39. When you choose Finger from the File menu, it will ask you for a machine and user
  40. name.  It will then attempt to find the machine, open port 79 (or 43 for the
  41. Whois Server), and send the username to it.  Then it will display whatever
  42. information the remote machine returns.

  44. • Limitations
  45.  
  46. CWRU Finger probably requires  System version 7.0 or higher and MacTCP v2.0 or
  47. later. If the return information exceed the window size, you can choose Save
  48. Reply as Text in File menu.  I recommend BBedit as your text editor.  TeachText
  49. or Simple Text do not wrap correctly with certain reply information. (Certain
  50. finger servers' reply messages use \n as end of line.  TeachText and SimpleText
  51. will do a new line only with \r.)

  55. This program is Freeware.  There is absolutely no cost to use this program. You
  56. MAY NOT DISTRIBUTE this program on any disk costing more than $5 without my
  57. explicit permission.
